Nairobi WSF called for a global day against war on the 17th of March,
anniversary of Iraq invasion.
All around the world, millions of people are going to ask for the end of
wars, starting from Iraq and Afghanistan, for the closure of bases, for
atomic disarmament. In that days the Italian Parliament is going again to
vote the war funding, Afghanistan at first place. That’s why we call on all
people sharing the dream of peace and justice, to build also in Italy a
global day against war.
The movement against Vicenza’s new military base represented, with its
extraordinary demonstration of 200000 people 17th of February), a turning
point against the war policies of our government, for a new season of
struggles able to break italian complicity with permanent war.
The imposition of Vicenza’s USA military base it’s a choice against people’s
will and against environmental defence, and also a strategy in favour of
war, on the same wavelenght with USA and Nato; this policy supports weapon
production and an extreme increase of military expenditure, until the
wreckless decision to buy from USA, for 13 billions, Johns Strike Fighter
bombers. A policy that is said to be “multilateral” but that is simply a
war policy, motivated by the wish to make Italy a “small -great" power ,
facilitating the growth of its financial holding throughout the World.
Prodi’s government fell at the Senate on war, overwhelmed by its
contradictions, coming both from the left as well as from the right wings.
Prodi’s second time round government, who was set on foot with the further
help of the right, challenges openly all movements; from NO-TAV , imposing
the “high speed” trains, to the environmental movements, imposing LNG
terminals (regasification units), to No-Vat (No–Vatican) being against
civil unions, but, above all, the government clashes with the anti-war
movement, declaring its complete loyalty to the USA and the NATO, and
supporting the war missions and the new Vicenza’s military base.
The illusion of a “friendly” government is failing and, for those who love
peace, is growing the responsibility of a new social opposition to war
policies: an opposition able to maintain continuity with the antiwar
movement -after the 17th of February - able to challenge the foreign policy
of the new Prodi’s government.
Our first aim, besides a victory in the fight against the new Vicenza’s base
Dal Molin, is the withdrawal of troop from Afghanistan, because our
permanence there means the maximum complicity with a war under Nato
leadership. The struggle against Vicenza’s base has become everybody’s
struggle: the same has to happen for the struggle against war policy,
starting from people and territories challenging the growing
militarization.
We want to built a big national demonstration in Rome, a second step along
the path we undertook in Vicenza , linking the opposition to military bases
to the opposition to military missions, linking the local struggle to the
national and international struggle against war; we will strongly request to
the members of our parliament to vote against the decree and the refinancing
of the mission in Afghanistan.
National demonstration in Rome on March, 17th.
Immediate withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan and from all the war
fronts. Closure of all USA and NATO military bases, to win the struggle
against Dal Molin military base. Against military expenditures. Support the
resistance of struggling people, from Vicenza to all occupied territories
and invaded countries.
