On September 30, 2007, 250 people gathered in front of the Burmese (Myanmar) Embassy in Seoul to protest against the bloody repression of the democracy movement in Burma. South Koreans are closing watching what is happening in Burma as it reminds them of the Gwangju democratic movement and the consequent massacre committed by the South Korean Army in 1980.
The protesters from human rights, civic group, and migrant workers organizations like Burmese Migrant Workers, Committee for Democracy of Burma, All Together, PSPD, KHIS, and Citizens’ Solidarity for Human Rights demanded an immediate stop to the violent repression and guarantee of freedom of speech and political activities.
One Burmese activist said “it is Daewoo International that is making the bullets used by the Burmese Army to repress our brother and sisters.” He called for active solidarity from Koreans to stop Daewoo from making weapons.
Everyone gathered agreed that they will continue to protest and spread the protest until the victory of the Burmese people is achieved.
