Condolences to all workers and their families for the preventable disaster of the explosion at the Maadanjou coal mine (Iran)
According to the latest news, at least 52 miners have been killed and more than 20 injured by an explosion at a coal mine in South Khorasan province.
It is essential that an urgent full and independent investigation be carried out to determine the causes of this explosion (which was announced as a gas leak in one of the workshops of the Tabas Coal Mining Company).
There is no doubt, however, that the failure to comply with the necessary standards and
regulations on workplace safety and work accidents, and in particular in the case of work in mines, was one of the main causes of this catastrophic and deadly explosion.
The employer, the companies involved and other individuals, institutions and authorities
concerned are directly and fully responsible for this massacre of workers. They must be held accountable, and extensive compensation must be paied to the families of all the victims of this unfortunate accident.
Until an investigation is taken place and the safety of this mine is guaranteed, no worker should be forced to work there. And in the meantime, the wages and benefits of these workers must be paid to them in full.
The Syndicate of Workers of Tehran and Suburbs Bus Company (Vahed), - Extends its condolences to the families of the victims of this human catastrophe, condemns
– the employer,
– all relevant authorities, including the Ministry of Labour and the Provincial Department of Labour,
for failing to inspect and monitor safety standards.
We demand legal action against the perpetrators of this irreparable tragedy, as well as the payment of salaries, compensation, and benefits to the families of these dear departed.
To hurt a worker, wherever they are, is to hurt all of us.
Organizing the workers’ response is based on unity and organization.
