Heat waves, melting ice caps, floods and landslides, droughts and desertification, mega-fires, disruption of monsoons, typhoons... In the oceans, rising seas and the reconfiguration of major ocean currents have begun. The devastating reality of climate change has dominated the year 2022, as the (lasting) consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic have dominated the previous years. Ecological chaos is now hitting the most developed countries, not just the poorest. In addition, there are attacks on social protection, rights and living standards, often unprecedented since the Second World War, including in the “North”.
These are the foundations of a common struggle, from North to South, from West to East, against the perpetrators of the ecological, health, social and democratic crises that are embodied by globalized finance, the oil giants and the new international capitalist aristocracy. This community of struggle obviously does not mean that solidarity with the most severely affected populations would no longer be necessary, far from it. They still need political and financial support.
This is the case for the five countries for which ESSF is conducting a permanent solidarity campaign: Pakistan (where a third of the territory has just been flooded), Mindanao in the Philippines (where natural calamities, repression and military conflicts are leading to successive humanitarian crises), Indonesia and Bangladesh (on the front line of the rising ocean waters), Burma (Myanmar), the scene of an atrocious war led by the military junta in power.
The usual pace of our financial campaigns was disrupted by the invasion of Ukraine, which became the focal point of international solidarity. We waited until June to launch a new financial appeal for Asia where the situation had lost none of its urgency. The response to this appeal was very encouraging: we received a very unusual number of donations in July, so that from June to mid-November, we were able to send 28,300 euros to our partners in Asia, namely:
• the MiHands coalition of associations, based in Mindanao, in the southern Philippines
• the “Free Women” movement in Indonesia,
• the BKF-BKS farmers’ associations and their allies in Bangladesh,
• the Labour Education Foundation (LEF) and the Crofter Foundation in Pakistan.
• a group of associations on the borders of Burma (Myanmar) that distributes aid to the resistance forces.
We are currently operating on a “just-in-time” basis: as soon as new donations allow, we transfer the money to our partners. We therefore need to replenish our Permanent Solidarity Fund for Asia in order to start the year 2023. This is the meaning of this appeal.
We warmly thank all those who have contributed to solidarity - and all those who will do so in the future...

ESSF, November 19, 2022
Donations to ESSF can be “dedicated” by indicating the country they are intended for. If not, they go to the Permanent Solidarity Fund for Asia and distributed according to emergencies to our partners. Donations can be made on a one-time basis, in the form of monthly transfers (which allows us to anticipate income) or a combination of both.
Remember that our association operates without any form of remuneration, on an entirely militant basis. Thus 100% of donations received are transferred to their recipients. The costs related to these transfers are mainly banking and reduced to a minimum (less than 5%). We do not “export” our own projects. We help movements to respond to humanitarian, social and democratic emergencies based on their involvement on the ground and their own perception of priorities.
In January 2023, we will provide a more precise update on the amount and use of the donations received this year.
