Since the operation “Ask back the protesting site” initiated by Thai government under Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva from 10 April 2010 in Rajadamnern to latest development on 15 May 2010 in Rajaprasong area, there are at least 50 casualties and 300 injuries. The government has clearly violated the international procedure on how to disperse the protestors which the government itself has acknowledged.
Up until now, Thai government has not only abused its power through the army, but also has never at once accepted any responsibility of its actions. Furthermore, the government has systematically, violently, and inhumanely suppressed the protestors by trying to render all the communication in the protesting areas to be ineffective. These have led to an intensifying amount of violence on the situation. Therefore, we, the group of university student, labour, and people, would like to ask for help from the United Nation as follow;
1. We would to ask the United Nation to pressure Thai government to cease all the hostility and violent actions toward the protestors, and denounce the usage of heavy weaponry to suppress unarmed protestors by Thai government under the Prime-minister Abhisit. Thai government actions had led to high number of both casualties and injuries of children, underage persons, women, disaster relief personnel, local and international media correspondents. This explicitly demonstrates the failure of the government to comply with the international procedure on how to humanely disperse the protestors.
2. We would like to ask the United Nation to pressure Thai government to take responsibility for violently suppressing the Red Shirt protestors. The government’s actions have undoubtedly violated the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, as well as other covenants which was ratified by Thai government. Thai government and its cabinet must immediately call parliament dissolution, and held a new election as soon as possible.
3. Due to the lack of independent and impartial judgment of Human Rights organizations in Thailand, We urge the United Nations to closely observe the Special Subcommittee appointed by National Human Rights Committee for investigation on the military crackdown on the 10th April 2010.
4. Upon the occasion that Thailand be a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council, The United Nations should pressure Thai government to exercise effective international human rights mechanism. In case of an appeal, Thai government must allow the Special Commissioner from United Nations High Commissioner of Human Rights (OHCHR) to investigate Human Rights violation issues, both on the governmental and non-governmental actors.
