The anti-antifascist motion was tabled by the far-right parties FvD [Forum for Democracy (Forum voor Democratie), a far-right populist party founded in 2016 by Thierry Baudet] and PVV [Party for Freedom (Partij voor de Vrijheid), the anti-immigration party led by Geert Wilders] and supported by other parts of the extreme right: JA21 [Correct Answer 21 (Juist Antwoord 21), a conservative right-wing party], BBB [Farmer-Citizen Movement (BoerBurgerBeweging), an agrarian populist party], SGP [Reformed Political Party (Staatkundig Gereformeerde Partij), a conservative Protestant party]. In an attempt to distract attention from its own crisis, and the woefully failed experiment with the PVV cabinet [The first Dutch government to include the far-right PVV party, which collapsed in 2025], the VVD [People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie), the main liberal conservative party] also supported the motion.
They are thus following the offensive launched by US President Donald Trump, following the murder of Charlie Kirk [a prominent conservative activist and founder of Turning Point USA, assassinated in 2025]. A far-right extremist who called the law that ended segregation in the US, the Civil Rights Act [The landmark 1964 legislation that outlawed discrimination based on race, colour, religion, sex, or national origin], a ’great mistake’. This brutal murder is part of a pattern of increasing political violence in the United States. Violence that targets, amongst others, African Americans, the Jewish community and Democrats.
Trump is trying to seize even more power by pretending that the left and Democrats are behind this violence. This whilst in recent decades, deadly violence in the United States has mainly come from the far-right corner. By placing the blame for this unilaterally on the left, Trump is unleashing a witch hunt with which dissidents are silenced and the foundation is laid for even more far-right terror in the future.
It is extremely worrying that we now have a parliamentary majority that sees this authoritarian behaviour as an example. But this vote does not come out of thin air. The first far-right cabinet in the post-WWII period is now caretaker. And in recent decades, the racism driven by the far right against, for example, Muslims and people seeking refuge has been increasingly normalised.
Give hatred no voice and take action against the far right!
