The Indonesian Women’s Alliance states that:
1. The Indonesian Women’s Alliance (API) condemns the House of Representatives and the government for passing the Revised TNI Law in a closed and undemocratic process. By passing the Revision of the TNI Law, it means that the State blatantly ignores the principle of civil society participation, and normalizes violations of the principles of policy making.
2. The passing of the Revised TNI Law worsens the democratic situation in Indonesia because it leads to military supremacy in the civilian sphere. The influence of militarism strengthens authoritarian power relations, gender bias, perpetuates violence, and threatens women’s equality and rights. The strengthening of militarism in the civilian space strengthens state control over the people through intimidating, repressive, violent means and the exclusion of women and vulnerable groups.
3. The Indonesian Women’s Alliance (API) calls on all elements of civil society to continue to strengthen consolidation and unity to safeguard democracy.
