Jesus’ teachings in the New Testament, particularly in the Sermon on the Mount, highlight the importance of respecting life and avoiding violence. The teaching in Matthew 5:21-22 encourages followers to resolve conflicts peacefully and to prioritize reconciliation over anger and violence.
Moreover, Jesus’ message of loving one’s enemies (Luke 6:35) underscores the principle of non-violence and compassion, even towards those who may be considered adversaries. This approach promotes a culture of forgiveness and understanding, which is essential for building a society that values human life and dignity.
This is also true in Islam. The Holy Quran states, “Whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land – it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one – it is as if he had saved mankind entirely” (Quran 5:32). This verse highlights the sanctity of life and the severe consequences of taking it unjustly. Islamic teachings also emphasize the importance of justice and compassion. Muslims are encouraged to promote peace and resolve conflicts through dialogue and reconciliation rather than violence. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught that Muslims should strive to be just and fair in all dealings, even with those who may be considered enemies.
We respect our community partners, partner-beneficiaries, even personnel who may have differing views on this political issue. This respect for differing perspectives fosters a culture of dialogue and understanding, which is vital for building a cohesive and inclusive society. However, while opinions may vary, our pursuit for justice and our fight against corruption and inequality may unite us all.
Rather than being divided by political affiliations or personal beliefs, we should come together to fight our true enemies which are exploitation, abuse of power, unfair labor practices, inequalities among other.
As an institution that sees human rights at its core values, we believe that the ICC’s actions against Duterte demonstrate that the international community will not tolerate impunity for crimes against humanity.
As we move forward, it is crucial that we continue to prioritize human rights and work collectively to combat corruption and inequality, ensuring a safer and more just world for all. By doing so, we can build a society where everyone’s rights are respected and protected, and where the well-being of all individuals, regardless of status & condition in life, is a top priority.
