The Supreme Court has overturned the cruel and unfounded sentence handed down to trade union activist and women’s rights defender Sharifeh Mohammadi and sent her case back to the same branch for reconsideration.
Sharifeh Mohammadi was arrested on 5 December 2023, she has long been held in solitary confinement and interrogated, and is currently incarcerated in Lakan prison in Rasht.
In July 2024, she was found guilty of the trumped-up charge and sentenced to death.
The Union of Workers of Vahed Bus Company in Tehran and the Suburbs,
– has repeatedly protested against Sharifeh Mohammadi’s arrest and death sentence,
– has worked for her release at the level of international organisations.
– welcomes the news that Sharifeh Mohammadi’s death sentence has been overturned,
– reiterates that Sharifeh Mohammadi had committed no crime and must be released immediately and unconditionally.
The main factors in the quashing of Sharifeh Mohammadi’s death sentence were:
– Sharifeh Mohammadi’s determination despite the harassment she suffered during interrogations and more generally at the hands of security and justice officials,
– the efforts of her family and the campaign to defend Sharifeh Mohammadi,
– the action of her lawyers, as well as national and international campaigns,
– the support of the trade union and freedom movements.
We have repeatedly stated that the death penalty is an inhuman punishment that runs counter to universal human values and must be abolished everywhere.
The sentences passed on other political prisoners sentenced to death, including Pakhshan Azizi, must be immediately revoked.
All trade union and civil society activists and political prisoners throughout the country must be released.
