The right to abortion is a major achievement of women and the fruit of a long fight for their rights. After a 9th presentation to the Parliament - the first presentation of the bill took place on May 28, 2007 - abortion is now legal in Argentina.
This is an achievement of the feminist struggles: the huge mobilisations of 2018, known as the “Marea verde”, have made visible the social decriminalisation of abortion, the fruit of years of struggle by the “Campaña Nacional por el derecho al Aborto Legal, Seguro y Gratuito” and the feminist movement; part of the trade union movement has also taken its part. It was a victory against the reactionaries, including the Catholic Church and the Evangelists, who fought against women’s rights.
– Because the right to control their bodies is fundamental for women.
– Because it is a structuring element of equality between women and men.
– It must be a right for all women, everywhere in the world.
The member organisations of the International Labor Network of Solidarity and Struggle welcome the legal progress in Argentina, support those who want a less restrictive law and recall that the fight for this fundamental right continues in many countries around the world!
