Sub : Restore peace, discard Singur Model' of development Dear Sir, Shocked and shattered by the unabashed and unlawful police brutality at Singur, we are forced to urge you to leave the path of violence and terror unleashed by the state administration and to stop this undemocratic aggression on the farms and farmers. Singur is under virtual siege, people are denied of their fundamental rights, freedom of movements are infringed, access to informations are denied, police atrocities crossed all limits, the farmers are attacked, beaten up mercilessly, police barged into their dwellings, ransacked their houses, arrested them arbitrarily. These are reminiscent of 25th September 2006 when the same band of police had unleashed similar attack on the innocent farmers and the women folk of the locality including children. We have reasons to believe that the present state government does have least respect for democracy which we cherish so much. Let it be reinforced that this area happens to have been formed by an active delta building process, the soil is most fertile and fertility improves after every flood. It is the duty and responsibility of the government to protect such precious well irrigated multi-crop lands, which happens to be one of the best agricultural bases in India, rather than taking the suicidal path of self-destruction. Any attempt to destroy it goes against the spirit of development, the much advertised government rhetoric. Please stop this unmindful aggression forthwith, restore normalcy in the area and discardSingur Model’ of development which
can at best be termed as perfect recipe for disaster.
