Condemnation of police brutality on Singur Farmers
In its attempt at rapid industrialisation, the Government of West Bengal
has been forcibly trying to acquire fertile agricultural land in Singur,
(Dist: Hooghly). The proposed car factory is to be set up by Tata
Motors. Thousands of peasant and agricultural labourer families in
Singur have been resisting the Government’s land grab , which will
displace them from there homes and would rob them from their sole source
of livelihood. The unparticipatory nature of the proposed “development”
has culminated in violent crackdown by the state on the villagers on 2nd
Dec.
While hundreds of people were mourning the dead of the Bhopal Gas
Disaster of 2nd Dec., 1984, we witnessed the state unleashing police
brutality on its own people. Both incidents are a reminder of the
state’s apathy towards the poor. We stand in solidarity with the farmers
of Singur, against all forms of state violence and the thoughtless
destruction of livelihoods. In the immediate aftermath of the incident
of 2nd Dec, the Government should care for the people who have suffered
at the hands of the police. We urge the government to ensure that such
incidents of terrorizing its own people are not repeated in the future.
Such acts of state aggression do not bode well for democracy in West Bengal.

Dear friends,
The data you will find in the url below is already dated. Police is
using massive force on peasants to evict them. But international and
national protest will still be useful.

Please take any form of solidarity action you think useful.
You can write to the Chief Minister of West Bengal, condemning a so
called development policy that evicts peasants from multicrop land for a pittance.
