Student unions affiliated to various parties have announced they will not allow the government’s vehicles to ply on the road for an indefinite period from tomorrow as part of their protests demanding cancellation of government’s January 18 decision to hike the prices of petroleum products.
The meeting of student unions affiliated to various political parties including UCPN (Maoist) aligned All Nepal National Independent Student Union - Revolutionary (ANNISU-R) on Thursday decided to continue their protests against hike in fuel prices, saying that the government’s decision of revising the price of the petroleum products today was “unsatisfactory”.
Similarly, the student unions have also announced series of protest programs in front of government’s campuses across the country to exert pressure on the government to scrap its decision of hiking the prices of the petroleum products.
The student unions have also condemned today’s decision of the government to slash the prices of petroleum products, saying that the revision is meager compared to the massive hike in petroleum products.
The government had hiked the price of the petrol by Rs. 10 per litre, diesel and kerosene by Rs. 9 per litre and cooking gas by Rs. 175 per cylinder.
However, coming under extensive pressure of various student unions affiliated to different political parties that organised nationwide protest against the price hike, the government had cut the price just by Rs. 3 per litre in petrol, by Rs. 4 per litre in diesel and kerosene, and Rs. 85 per cylinder in cooking gas.
With this revision, the consumers now have to buy petrol at Rs. 112 per litre, diesel and kerosene at Rs. 81 per litre and cooking gas at Rs. 1415 per cylinder.
